Anime studio Gainax is supervising the production. R:MIX theatrical production company founder Seiya Machida is writing the script, while musician and actor IZAM is producing the play. Masahiro Nomura is serving as stage director.

Regular ticket sales began on September 13. Regular tickets cost 6,800 yen (about US$66), tickets with a pamphlet cost 8,500 yen (US$82), and premium tickets with a pamphlet and limited-edition goods cost 9,000 yen (US$87).

The play will present new material that “wasn’t able to be presented” in the original television anime series. Like other Gurren Lagann titles, “engeki” has a literal meaning for its kanji characters — “flame attack” — and a possible wordplay in its pronunciation — “theatrical play.”

Gainax’s Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann television anime premiered in Japan in 2007. Sci Fi Channel, currently known as Syfy, first aired the series on television in the United States in 2008. Aniplex USA released the Japanese Blu-ray Disc box set that includes the series and both films in North America last year.

The series has also inspired two Gurren Lagann Parallel Works original video anime and various manga adaptations and spinoffs.
