The Art of Gundam special exhibition will be held at the Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan in Osaka’s Minato Ward from July 12 until Aug. 31.

Dedicated to “Mobile Suit Gundam,” which premiered in 1979, the exhibition will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the robot anime series, and also the 35th anniversary in 2015 of the release of “Gunpla” plastic models of robots from the franchise.

The exhibition is set to be held in Tokyo next year. Visitors to the Osaka venue will make 1,000 Gunpla models that will be put on display at the Tokyo venue in 2015.

There are two main highlights in the exhibition.

About 1,000 drawings and other materials from the production (including copies) will be displayed for public viewing. They include notes written by series creator and director Yoshiyuki Tomino during the development stage, as well as background art, art boards, original illustrations and other documents.

Works from art director Mitsuki Nakamura (1944-2011), animation director Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, mechanical designer Kunio Okawara and many other artists will also be featured at the exhibition, along with lighting, sound effects and video footage.

It is possible that never-before-seen items will be unveiled at the exhibition. The art event seems certain to be larger than previous exhibitions in both quality and quantity.

The other main attraction is a special theater modeled after the main deck of the warship White Base, where a short movie will be shown on the ship’s attempt to gain re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere during a battle.

In addition, video footage from “Gundam: Reconguista in G,” the latest installment in the franchise helmed by Tomino, will be showcased.
