An all-new feature film adaptation of the “Space Battleship Yamato 2199” animated TV series will hit cinemas nationwide on Dec. 6, it has been confirmed.

“Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Hoshi-Meguru Hakobune” (the star-cruising Ark) will be helmed by Yutaka Izubuchi, who served as chief director for the TV series. Other details including the story and the time setting have yet to be revealed.

The announcement was made on April 21 at an unveiling ceremony of the special project celebrating the 40th anniversary of the original “Space Battleship Yamato” series, which premiered in October 1974. The event was held at the Seibu Gallery in the Seibu Ikebukuro department store in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, where the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Art Exhibition was held until May 7.

In addition, it was revealed that “Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Tsuioku no Kokai” (the voyage of remembrance) will also be showcased at special events starting Oct. 11. The film is a compilation of the seven-part “Yamato 2199” TV series that premiered in April 2013.

Voice cast members Takayuki Sugo (who plays the role of Captain Juzo Okita), Aya Uchida (Yuria Misaki) and producer Shoji Nishizaki made an appearance at the gallery to announce the special project.

The art exhibition featured the 1/100-scale model of the space cruiser, as well as more than 200 items of original drawings and production materials.
