The original novel is itself a spinoff of the 2006 visual novel software Muv-Luv Alternative from the adult game company Age. This side story follows the test pilots and mechanics in the United Nations Forces’ Tactical Surface Fighter Testing Unit in Alaska. Japanese-American Yūya Bridges (Daisuke Ono) is the Argos Test Team’s main pilot for “XFJ Project,” the initiative that is developing the newest Tactical Surface Fighter. Yui Takamura (Mai Nakahara) is the head of development for the project from the Japanese Empire’s side.

Takayuki Inagaki (Desert Punk, Rosario + Vampire) is directing the project at the studios ixtl x Satelight. Yumiko Hara (Baby Princess 3D Paradise 0 [Love]) is designing the characters.
