The official website for the Evangelion franchise was updated on Wednesday with new details about the official Evangelion smartphone, including an “Evangelion 3D” short that will be included in the phone. The docomo NEXT series SH-06d NERV phone is one of several from the manufacturer Sharp that is capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D video.
Khara, the studio behind the four-film revamp of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series, is producing what the website describes as “the first Evangelion 3D video” specifically for this phone. The short movie will be over two minutes long with about 90 cuts, including new cuts. A separate “3D Model Movie” will showcase the 3D modeling data for 22 elements, such as the Evangelion units, Angels, and entry plugs, that Khara produced for the phone.
The phone will also have “MAGI Home,” a 3D home app designed as if it was a terminal interface to the anime’s MAGI supercomputer. “MAGI Home” will have over 100 custom icon designs, and it can toggle between 2D and 3D display modes.
The phone will have an exclusive mini game, “Attack of The 8th Angel,” which will recreate the battle with the 8th Angel from the Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance film as a time-trial game. The player can choose one of three different Evangelion units to pilot.
The phone will include optional panel covers — the previously revealed Front/Rear Panel Type:NERV and a Rear Panel Type:MAGI with a holographic NERV logo. An exclusive Desktop Holder SH38 can prop up the phone for easier viewing of videos, such as Japan’s new NOTTV digital broadcast service.
More details will be announced in mid-May, including a “MAGI Widget,” the phone’s packaging, a NERV personnel app, a 3D Special Movie Viewer, a horizontal screen for use with the desktop holder, the startup and lock screens, the custom Palette UI theme, wallpaper, music, fonts, and other content besides the “Attack of The 8th Angel” game.
The concept of the special-edition unit is a phone that would be government-issued by the Nerv organization in the world of the new Evangelion films. The phone is slated to go on sale in June. The website posted a teaser video earlier this month:
